I had the chance to interview two locals, Tyler Powlesland and Andrew Gallagher, to uncover why Orange County—and Costa Mesa, CA in particular—holds a special place in their hearts.
The Draw of Orange County: Tyler Powlesland's Story
From Columbus, OH to Costa Mesa, CA
Tyler Powlesland made the cross-country move from Columbus, Ohio, to Orange County in May 2019. Initially settling in Aliso Viejo, Tyler eventually found himself in Costa Mesa, a city that offered proximity to the beach and a vibrant lifestyle, even on a tight budget.
Tyler shares:
“I wanted to live near the beach where I could ride my bike and enjoy the coastal lifestyle. Costa Mesa checked all the boxes—it was affordable, close to the beach, and full of things to do.”
The weather has been a game-changer for Tyler, who traded Ohio’s harsh winters for California’s year-round sunshine.
“Seasonal depression is real in Ohio. Here, I’m outdoors all the time, enjoying bike rides, live music, and the beach. It’s been incredible for my mental health.”
Favorite Neighborhoods and Hidden Gems
When it comes to favorite spots in Orange County, Tyler is unequivocal about his love for Laguna Beach.
“Laguna Beach is a gem—the vibes, the unique homes, and the scenic drives down PCH. Crescent Bay is my go-to spot for beach days.”
Hidden gems include West Street Beach and Badlands Park in Laguna Niguel, both offering breathtaking views and a sense of escape.
The Sense of Community
Tyler has been struck by the active community in Costa Mesa.
“I’ve participated in local clean-ups and attended music-in-the-park events. It’s inspiring to see so many people come together to enjoy and improve our community.”
Andrew Gallagher's Story
From Phoenix, AZ to Costa Mesa, CA
Andrew Gallagher’s move to Costa Mesa in 2009 came with a bit of serendipity—it wasn’t his first choice. Moving from Phoenix, AZ, Andrew initially aimed for Los Angeles but settled in Costa Mesa because of his mother’s preference for its proximity to South Coast Plaza and Little Saigon.
Despite this, Andrew has grown to appreciate Costa Mesa’s charm:
“The lifestyle here is culturally diverse and vibrant, with great dining spots like Triangle Square and The Camp.”
The Community
For Andrew, he has found that people tend to be more involved in the community than in his previous location in Phoenix. For example, he served on an HOA in Phoenix where there was not much involvement, but in Costa Mesa he serves on his HOA and has found residents to be a lot more active. Also, for the last 15 years he has been able to drive to Los Angeles for social activities and volunteering opportunities while also enjoying the Costa Mesa lifestyle as well.
